Multilingual URLs & Routing

Prefix, query and no-change URL modes plus route resolution.

Configure Language URL mode under Settings.

Prefix mode — recommended

English: /about-us/
isiZulu: /zu/about-us/

Prefix mode gives each public language a stable crawlable URL and works best with multilingual SEO.

Query mode

/about-us/?lang=zu

Useful where rewriting/prefix routing is difficult.

No URL change

The frontend language can change without changing the browser URL. This is simple but less suitable for public multilingual SEO.

Home page

A language root such as /zu/ is mapped to the configured static WordPress front page rather than the Blog page.

Custom permalink fallback

Some plugins or custom permalink environments are not resolved reliably by WordPress's normal URL lookup. The router therefore includes fallback resolution by WordPress path and normalized stored permalink.

Visual Editor independence

Visual Editor opens the original working permalink with an explicit secured content ID, so a broken translated route should not prevent editors from opening the visual editing environment.

Internal links

When Keep internal page links in the visitor's active language is enabled, internal page/post links are localized to the current language where possible.
