Languages

Add, enable, order and select the default language.

Open Instant Languages → Languages.

Each language record contains:

• language code, e.g. en, zu, xh, af
• locale, e.g. zu_ZA
• English/display name
• native name
• optional flag/label
• enabled state
• default-language state
• sort order

Language codes

Codes must use lowercase letters/numbers/hyphens and should match the codes expected by your configured translation provider where possible.

Default language

The default language represents the source/original website language. The default language:

• is always enabled
• cannot be deleted while it is the default
• uses the original WordPress content rather than a translation record

To change the default language, assign a different language as default first.

Enabled versus stored languages

Disabling a language removes it from normal public language choices but does not require deleting its stored translations.

Recommended South African setup

For a South African institutional site you may configure languages such as English, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi, Xitsonga, siSwati, Tshivenda and isiNdebele. Actual automatic-provider support should always be confirmed using provider diagnostics before starting a large translation job.
